About the Reut Institute and the "Top 15 Vision"
The Reut Institute is a policy group designed to provide real-time long-term strategic support to the Government of Israel. We provide a variety of services in decision-making support in areas that are central to Israel's future security and prosperity.
In the socio-economic realm, the organizing idea of the Reut Institute is the 'Top 15 Vision'. This vision mandates that Israel become one of the fifteen leading nations in the world in terms of quality of life.
Professor Hausmann's visit: The Mechanics of Leapfrogging
In light of this vision, the Reut Institute will host a conference for Professor Ricardo Hausmann from Harvard University. Professor Hausmann is a world-renown economist, who specializes in economic 'leapfrogging'.
His visit will take place on January 8th-10th, 2008. Professor Hausmann will share his insights on the mechanics of Israel's socio-economic leapfrogging with ministers, parliamentarians, leaders of the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Click here for Professor Hausmann's full schedule.
Professor Hausmann's Background
Hausmann is a main contributor to the world's understanding of why certain states experience high growth rates, whereas other states experience more moderate growth rates. His work has mapped the "product space" of nations in order to uncover trends of economic growth and forecast future trends. Hausmann's theory identifies the key aspects of policy-planning to drive high growth.
Professor Hausmann displays both excellence in research and rich experience in design and implementation of economic development and growth policy. His innovation in economic "leapfrogging" earned him the following titles:
-
Professor of the Practice of Economic Development and Director of the Center for International Development, Kennedy School of Government;
- First Chief Economist of the Inter-American Development Bank (1994-2000), in the framework of which he launched the Research Division;
- Former Minister of Planning of Venezuela (1992 to 1993) and a member of the Board of the Central Bank of Venezuela;
- Chairman of the Joint Council of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund;
- Senior Consultant in Economic Reforms of South Africa;
- Leading current researcher in the field of energy innovation.
Other topics that Prof. Hausmann will discuss on his visit to Israel:
- Will the US current account deficit trigger a global crisis?
- China: Can it keep the growth miracle up? Will it wreck the global economy? Should it be pressured to appreciate the Yuan?
- South Africa's and South America's Growth Engines
- Which Countries are Likely to Benefit from the Coming Bio-Fuel Boom?
