Taking a Page out of Costa Rica's Book

It is an Israeli interest to encourage the establishment of a Palestinian state and strengthen the existing Palestinian Authority through building its institutions and upgrading its symbols of sovereignty and attributes of statehood.
Both Ha'aretz and the Jerusalem Post report that Israel criticized Costa Rica for deciding to recognize the State of Palestine.

Last week one of Abu Mazen's advisors, Yasser Abed Rabbo, threatened to declare statehood unilaterally. According to some reports, (Akiva Eldar, Ha'aretz) what most worries Israel is not a Palestinian declaration of statehood, but a Palestinian decision to give up on a state alongside Israel and call for one binational state for all its citizens instead.

It is thus an Israeli interest to encourage the establishment of a Palestinian state and strengthen the existing PA through building its institutions and upgrading its symbols of sovereignty and attributes of statehood.

Thus the Costa Rican recognition serves Israel's political interest in that it furthers the logic of the political process based on the Two State Solution and provides an 'insurance policy' in the event negotiations fail. With this in mind, Israel should reconsider its policy regarding this issue.
