Iran's diplomatic initiative: heading East

Ahmadinejad's visit to Afghanistan today, illustrates Iran's strive for Regional Hegemony.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met President Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan today on his first visit to Kabul since he was elected in 2005.

Afghanistan is Ahmadinejad's first station in his regional tour to central Asia. This tour illustrates Iran's strive for Regional Hegemony.

Iran seeks to control political developments in the Middle East and Central Asia and to gain status of a legitimate regional hegemony. It is building political and economic tools in order to achieve political influence over its neighboring states, as well as in farther regions, including Iraq, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, the Kurdish areas, Lebanon and the PA.

Ahmadinjad's visit to Afghanistan manifests this trend, as it also aims to promote Iran's aspirations of becoming a full member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), schedualed to convene in Kyrgyzstan later this week.
